Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith took another positive step forward with his recovery on Saturday, Aug. 1.
Smith has been dealing with an inflamed disc in his neck that’s kept him out of major league action since June 5.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters that it will still take at least three or four weeks, including a rehab assignment, before Smith could potentially be activated for a return.
Smith was spotted on the field this week, hitting at Dodger Stadium on Friday and throwing on Saturday.
The Dodgers have relied on Dalton Rushing during Smith’s absence. While there were some miscues early, Roberts has been pleased with his performances in recent weeks.
"He's doing great and growing up," Roberts said of Rushing earlier this week. "I love the relationships he's building with the pitchers. He cares and that's a really good thing, and he's starting to build trust with those guys."
Rushing had a few passed-ball incidents this season, with the most notable being with Shohei Ohtani on the mound.

With Smith still expected out for a month, the Dodgers could consider adding another catcher to the roster.
"The Dodgers’ interest in the catcher’s market centers around wanting a more veteran third catcher option, with Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. and Chuckie Robinson representing the club’s depth options behind Rushing," according to Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic.
