It's been a better season in 2026 for the Colorado Rockies, even if the overall record still has the team 23 games under .500. There are signs of growth in the first year under president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes.
Still, should the Rockies be sellers before or at the trade deadline, what does it mean for the rest of this season?
Tim Britton of The Athletic slotted all 30 MLB clubs in different tiers, putting a focus on where every team looks at this point. Britton also takes into consideration the status of those clubs approaching the trade deadline, too.
Colorado is slotted in Tier 6, which also states, "Let's get to the offseason."
"The Colorado Rockies have probably exceeded expectations so far in Paul DePodesta’s first season running the front office. They could move down to Tier 7 if they start to deal core players such as Hunter Goodman," Britton wrote.
What is Tier 7? "How much do we have to change?"
Goodman, Mickey Moniak, Jake McCarthy, Willi Castro, Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland, and Michael Lorenzen are some of the Colorado players whose names have been getting attention before the trade deadline.
There has been a lot of scuttlebutt about Goodman. Questions have surrounded his name and the word on the street has been that Goodman might be available for a trade. Recently, though, there have been other reports that don't even mention his name connected to the trade deadline.
Yes, it's been a tough season for Rockies fans to see their club continue to be in last place in the National League West Division. As for signs of progress, Colorado won its 40th game this season well ahead of when they did in 2025.
McCarthy is one of the best fielders and hitters for the Rockies. He continues to impress with his hustling style of play. McCarthy always makes sure to run out groundouts to first base, and he'll also look to get another base on a base hit.
Freeland and Lorenzen probably are in line to get traded by DePodesta. Both have not been really good in the Rockies' rotation. They have had to get Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer out to the mound for a pitching change earlier than he'd want to do.
What will Colorado do with these players? Either they are going to sell them off for prospects, or keep one or two with the ballclub. I think Goodman and McCarthy might not be traded, although anything can happen.
If I had to take three players among those listed above that have a good chance to stay, then I'd say Moniak, Goodman, and McCarthy. Also, Senzatela is a bit of a wild card when it comes to the trade deadline.
Again, though, all of these trade decisions are in the hands of DePodesta. We will see what the front office does, or doesn't do, in the coming days.
