Let's stomp the breaks on any Hunter Goodman trade talk for a bit. The Colorado Rockies' catcher rolled up to home plate on Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals.
With two outs in the eighth inning and facing a 3-2 pitch, Goodman smoked his 31st home run this season just beyond the left-field wall. Goodman finished by going 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Who else was hot for Colorado? Mickey Moniak, another name that has been thrown around ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline on Aug. 3. Moniak went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen didn't come out of the Rockies' bullpen with his best stuff against Washington. Lorenzen lasted just 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits, six earned runs, walked one, struck out five, and surrendered two home runs.
Colorado reliever Juan Mejia, the fifth pitcher (including Lorenzen) that Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer used on Tuesday night, picked up the victory after working a clean eighth inning. Jordan Romano came on in the ninth, notched two strikeouts, and got his seventh save this season.
The Nationals opened up the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Rockies came back to score four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Washington scored two runs in the third and fourth innings, but Colorado put up another run in the bottom of the third.
At that point, Washington led Colorado 6-5. The Rockies, though, didn't sulk and take their bats and balls and go home. They scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 7-6 lead. But the Nationals weren't done, either. Washigton added a run in the top of the seventh inning, tying the contest at Coors Field at 7-7.
All of this led up to Goodman's big moment, where he made home run No. 31 mean something.
Final score: Rockies 8, Nationals 7.
Want a little more good news, Rockies fans? With the San Francisco Giants losing on Tuesday night, the Rockies, at 41-62 this season, are just two games behind the Giants for fourth place in the National League West Division.
After losing Monday night's opener and coming back to pick up a Tuesday night win, the chance for a series win sits right in front of the Rockies.
The Nationals and Rockies close out their three-game series with an afternoon game at Coors Field on Wednesday.
