Sure, there have been a lot of stories in the MLB media about Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman. Some of those stories have indicated that Goodman might be solid trade bait as the MLB Trade Deadline draws closer on Aug. 3.
But one media outlet is making a prediction. What is it? The Rockies will extend Goodman on his contract.
This season, Goodman has been the power hitter in the middle of the Rockies' lineup. He has 30-plus home runs already and reaching the 40-home run level is not out of the realm of possibilities.
Keeping Goodman is a wise choice for Colorado, should they not trade him at all. A couple of other stories have come out in the past couple of days indicating that the asks that the Rockies are making for any deal is too steep.
Another factor involved not only for the Rockies, but for all of the MLB world, is that some executives believe there will be a play stoppage in the 2027 MLB season. There are those even wondering how many games will happen, too.
Sam Blum of The Athletic indicated what the Rockies might do at the trade deadline in regard to Goodman.
"Maybe it comes before the deadline, maybe after. But Colorado seems keen on building around their best player, not trading him amid a lost season," Blum wrote. "Goodman could command a franchise-altering haul, given his pre-arb status and monster power numbers.
"The will they, won’t they with Goodman is one of the most intriguing deadline questions, and how they handle Goodman could be reflective of how they view their young core as a whole," Blum continued. "Keeping him could be seen as a vote of confidence that new president of baseball ops Paul DePodesta sees genuine building blocks."
Colorado had a day off on Monday before starting a short two-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego.
In 366 at-bats this season, Goodman has 95 hits, 31 home runs, and 60 RBIs. Goodman also has five stolen bases, which are decent numbers for a catcher. One really never sees a catcher burning up the basepaths, but this does give clubs a bit of a look into the other options that Goodman could bring with him.
Right now, Goodman has a slash line of .260/.331/.888.
In his last seven games, Goodman has gone 9-for-24 with four home runs, nine RBIs, four walks, nine strikeouts, and no stolen bases. His slash line during this stretch has been .375/.464/.917.
Those numbers are not too shabby at all.
Goodman has been a leader on the Rockies, not only on the field but off it as well. He continues to show a level of professionalism and authority when he's managing the pitchers behind the plate.
Should Goodman continue to put up solid numbers like these, then Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta plenty of reasons to not trade him at all.
Remember, this is the first year that DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes are involved in the MLB Trade Deadline decisions. It would be foolish, to me, to see Goodman traded away.
Now, we wait and see what Colorado does in the next week.
