The Steelers received fantastic news on Saturday when Aaron Rodgers re-signed with the team on a one-year contract. Even backup quarterback Will Howard is thrilled to have Rodgers back in the building, even though his return could mean losing a roster spot.
"I was excited, I really was," Howard said about Rodgers on Tuesday. "We really developed a special friendship, I felt, last year. To have another year with him and learn from him, so he can continue to pour into Drew (Allar) and me, is an unbelievable opportunity for me as a young player in this league to learn from one of the legends who has been doing it for a long time."
The Steelers drafted Howard in the 2025 Draft, giving him a season to sit behind Rodgers and learn a lot from him. If Rodgers hadn't decided to come back this season, there was a good chance Howard could have competed for the starting job. However, now that Rodgers is back on the field, there’s a possibility that Howard won't make the 53-man roster.
Pittsburgh already has Mason Rudolph and Drew Allar in the quarterback room, and the Steelers aren't likely to part ways with Allar since they drafted him in the third round of this year's draft.
Howard might be the odd man out, since he has no NFL experience and didn't play in a game last season. The Steelers could decide to select Rudolph as the No. 2 quarterback because he has appeared in 34 regular-season games, filling Rodgers' backup role with experience.
