Despite growing speculation surrounding Chennai Super Kings' leadership structure after another underwhelming IPL campaign, the franchise is not expected to part ways with head coach Stephen Fleming. According to Cricbuzz, the former New Zealand captain will continue in the role as CSK look to rebuild following two difficult seasons.
Fleming has been a central figure in the franchise's journey since the IPL began in 2008. After representing the side as a player in the inaugural season, he took over as head coach in 2009 and has since overseen one of the most successful periods in IPL history. That long-standing association appears set to continue, with the franchise maintaining its faith in him despite recent criticism.
CSK's performances over the last two seasons have fallen well below their usual standards. The five-time champions finished at the bottom of the table in 2025 and followed it up with an eighth-place finish in the recently concluded campaign. Those results sparked frustration among sections of the fanbase, with some supporters even launching "Sack Fleming" campaigns on social media.
However, the franchise is not planning a change at the top. Fleming's contract, which is renewed on a year-to-year basis, is expected to be extended once again, continuing a pattern that has existed for several seasons.
At present, Fleming is in the United States overseeing Texas Super Kings, Chennai's sister franchise in Major League Cricket, where he also serves as head coach. CSK are expected to conduct a detailed assessment of their IPL season after the conclusion of the ongoing MLC campaign, with several important decisions likely to be discussed. Fleming's future, however, is not expected to be among the topics under serious consideration, as his continuation is viewed internally as a certainty.
The development once again underlines the influence of MS Dhoni within the CSK setup. While Dhoni's standing within the franchise has never been in doubt, the decision to continue with Fleming further highlights the strength of their long-standing professional relationship. The pair have worked closely together for well over a decade and remain key figures in shaping the team's direction.
