Caitlin Clark made her return from a back injury last night against the Los Angeles Sparks, scoring just nine points in 16 minutes as she works through a minutes restriction. The Phoenix Mercury await the Indiana Fever tonight, and it's a matchup many have been circling since the Alyssa Thomas foul controversy.

Thomas drove her closed fist into Clark's throat during their game on June 24, a 111-109 Mercury win. While the referees didn't call a foul initially, the WNBA gave Thomas a Flagrant 2, resulting in a one-game suspension, the following day. Clark missed the next two games, and now she's on a minutes restriction in which she can only play in three-minute spurts, which seemed to disrupt her rhythm against the Sparks.

So, will Clark play in tonight's highly-anticipated game against the Mercury? The answer is no, she will not. Clark is still limited following her back injury, so playing in a back-to-back never seemed likely. We'll probably see Clark back on the court for the Fever's game against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday.

Are Fever intentionally sitting Caitlin Clark vs. Mercury, Alyssa Thomas?

Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters the decision to sit Clark tonight had nothing to do with the matchup. She says it was purely driven from a conversation with the Indiana medical staff.
