EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — The Mater Dei Wildcats are heading back to state for a second season in a row. The team will face Bluffton in the 2A State Championship game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Redemption is on the mind of many veteran players who fell just short in the title game a season ago against Boone Grove.
“It was a tough game it didn’t go our way, we knew after that was over, we would set our sights on coming back again,” said senior starting pitcher Max Miller.
These wildcats are much different looking than the state team from a year prior. A new head coach and some new faces, but at its core, is a group that now knows what it takes.
“If we show up and we show up flat, we are going to go home in second place. But if we are capable of playing our best, then we will bring a state title home,” said Head Coach Adam Wildeman.
“I knew I had to step up into a leadership role and encourage guys to come ready to play every day,” said Miller.
That no quit mentality by Miller has certainly been the mark of this team. The wildcats that haven’t lost a game since start of May and have held opposing teams to two runs or fewer in every game this postseason except one.
Mater Dei now sits just a win away from a state title and their first 30-win season since 1999.
