SPRINGFIELD–The Logan-Rogersville High School boys basketball team didn’t win a title at the 41st Annual Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, but they definitely won the respect of the nationally ranked competition, along with the local and distant fans in attendance.
The Wildcats rounded out the three-day event with a narrow, 58-53 loss to St. John Bosco in the Consolation Championship game. It was the team’s second loss over a 3-game span, but both losses were within 10 points of the opposition, which, included the opening round against the No. 1 team in the nation, Paul VI, who finished runner-up in the championship finale.
LogRog’s latest loss, on Saturday, was a combination of missing some quality looks from the three-point line, where they had made practically everything between Thursday and Friday, and the lethal execution by the Braves’ Christian Collins. Collins, a 6’8 five-star, senior prospect that has all the blue-blood programs at his doorstep, showed why he’s a big-time talent.
The potential NBA talent scored 15 points in the first half, by making 6-7 shots, then added 11 more in the second half for a game-high 26. His two biggest highlights were both arena shaking dunks.
The first, a two-handed slam, came in the first quarter off a steal to give the Braves an 11-0 lead to start the game. The second, a one-handed putback with just over 2 minutes to go in regulation, was the nail in the Wildcats coffin.
On the flipside, Wildcats star guard, Chase Branham also showcased his talents. The 2027 Indiana Hoosiers commit tallied a game-high 21 points. It was the third consecutive game Branham scored 20 or more in the competition. In total, Branham recorded 74 points across the three contests.
While the close losses sting, they prove how legitamite the Logan-Rogersville program is. Betwen Branham’s talents, Sutton Shook’s three-pointer sniper ability, and the combination of size and power on the interior with Titus and Marcus Moore, the Wildcats should be able to make a deep run in the state tournament.
I can firmly say, without question, this was the most competitive Springfield team I’ve seen participate in the T of C in my four years covering the annual event. And man, it sure was fun to witness every second of the Wildcats performance.
