Oklahoma baseball won its first national title since 1994 on Monday, June 22, defeating North Carolina, 13-2, in Game 3 of the championship series of the 2026 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
For at least one prominent Sooners fan, the lopsided score brought back some fond memories.
Legendary Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops posted a picture of the score in the top of the ninth inning on social media, along with the caption “National Championship score looks familiar.”

At the end of the 2000 season, Stoops’ second at the school, the Sooners won what was then the BCS national championship by defeating reigning national champion Florida State, 13-2, in the Orange Bowl.
The Seminoles’ only points in the game with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, when Oklahoma punter Jeff Ferguson scooped up a high snap and ran into the end zone, resulting in a safety, rather than giving Florida State excellent field position to potentially score a touchdown and keep its hopes of a late comeback alive.
Stoops had been one of several prominent Sooners to support Oklahoma at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha over the past two weeks during the CWS, a group that also included Barry Switzer, Brian Bosworth and current Sooners quarterback John Mateer.
Stoops is the winningest coach in Oklahoma history, going 191-48 over 18 full seasons at the school, as well as a one-game stint as the interim head coach in 2021 after his successor, Lincoln Riley, left for USC ahead of the Sooners’ victory in the Alamo Bowl. Before his brief and unexpected return, he had retired from college coaching in June 2017.
In its championship-sealing victory, Oklahoma racked up 14 hits against North Carolina, with second baseman Kyle Branch driving in six runs. It completed one of the more memorable postseason runs in recent college baseball history, as the Sooners went 11-2 in the 2026 NCAA Tournament after entering the event with a 32-21 record, including a 14-16 mark in SEC play.
It’s the third NCAA title in program history.
