Oklahoma just won the national championship, but who is the greatest Sooners baseball alum ever? originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The 2026 season will forever hold a special place in Oklahoma baseball history. Coach Skip Johnson's Sooners capped a remarkable run by defeating North Carolina in the Men's College World Series finals, delivering the program's third national championship and first since 1994. It also added another chapter to one of college baseball's most underrated traditions. Oklahoma baseball dates back to 1898 and now owns three national titles, 12 College World Series appearances and nearly 90 former players who have reached Major League Baseball.
With the Sooners back on top of the college baseball world, it's a fair question to ask:
Who is the greatest Oklahoma baseball alum of all time? There are several worthy candidates, but one name stands above the rest.
Bobby Witt Sr. remains the gold standard
These days, baseball fans know Bobby Witt because of his son, Royals superstar Bobby Witt Jr.. But before Bobby Jr. became one of the faces of Major League Baseball, Bobby Witt Sr. built one of the greatest professional careers ever produced by Oklahoma.
A standout pitcher for the Sooners in the mid-1980s, Witt was selected third overall in the 1985 MLB Draft and went on to spend 16 seasons in the majors.
His resume is difficult to top:
142 career wins
Nearly 2,000 strikeouts
More than 2,500 innings pitched
16 MLB seasons
Longevity matters when evaluating greatness, and few Oklahoma products have matched Witt's combination of durability and production.
Danny Jackson has a strong argument
If there is a challenger for the top spot, it might be Danny Jackson. The former Sooner left-hander won 194 games during a 15-year major league career and played a key role on the 1990 World Series champion Cincinnati Reds.
Jackson finished second in National League Cy Young Award voting during his memorable 23-win season in 1988 and earned multiple All-Star selections. Nearly 200 career victories remains one of baseball's most exclusive clubs.
Jon Gray became the face of modern Oklahoma baseball
For younger fans, the answer may be Jon Gray. Gray dominated at Oklahoma, became the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft and developed into an MLB All-Star.
His success helped re-establish Oklahoma as a national baseball power and inspired a new generation of Sooners pitchers. When Oklahoma returned to the College World Series in 2022 and again during its championship run in 2026, Gray's name remained one of the first examples recruits and fans pointed to when discussing the program's ability to develop elite talent.

Several other Sooners deserve recognition
The list of notable Oklahoma baseball alumni is extensive. Players such as Garrett Richards, Chase Anderson, Russ Ortiz, Jason Bartlett and Mickey Hatcher all enjoyed successful professional careers after leaving Norman.
More recent stars such as Cade Horton are still writing their stories.
The final verdict
Winning a national championship has a way of making fans look back at a program's history. As Oklahoma celebrates its latest title, the debate over the greatest player to wear a Sooners uniform is sure to continue.
But when you combine draft status, career longevity, statistical production and major league impact, Bobby Witt Sr. still owns the strongest case. The Sooners have produced dozens of major leaguers and several stars.
None have built a professional resume quite like his. And now, with Oklahoma once again sitting atop college baseball, his place in program history feels even more secure.
