The judge presiding over Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby vs. the NCAA recused himself Wednesday, according to On3.

Judge Phillip Hays was initially assigned to the case, but has since backed out. A social media post showed Hayes from a Texas Tech booster event posing with the Red Raiders mascot.

Sorsby has filed suit against the NCAA for an expedited decision on admitted gambling activities. He has been placed on indefinite leave from Texas Tech while the NCAA sorts out his punishment. "Texas Tech is expected to rule Sorsby ineligible and file for reinstatement with the NCAA for the 2026 season," according to On3.

Sorsby wants an injunction by the court to allow him to play the 2026 season. The NCAA opened an investigation into Sorsby’s gambling addiction. From 2022 until this year, Sorsby reportedly placed thousands of bets on several sports and events, including bets on Indiana football games while on the roster.

NCAA guidelines are clear on gambling and haven't changed since 2023.

“Student-athletes who engage in activities to influence the outcomes of their own games or knowingly provide information to individuals involved in sports betting activities will potentially face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports. This would also apply to student-athletes who wager on their own games or on other sports at their own schools.”
