Attorneys representing Brendan Sorsby are pushing for resolution in the NCAA's investigation of the Texas Tech football team's new quarterback, according to a report Friday, May 15, from Yahoo Sports.

National college football writer Ross Dellenger, in a post on X, reported that Sorsby's attorneys have given the NCAA "a request for an expedited resolution to reinstating his eligibility over sports gambling allegations and informing the association that a legal challenge is imminent."

Sorsby's legal team includes Jeffrey Kessler, one of two lead attorneys for the plaintiffs in three athlete-compensation antitrust cases against the NCAA and the Power Five conferences. The cases ended in what's commonly known as the House v. NCAA settlement.

On April 27, Tech athletics announced that Sorsby had stepped away from the program to enter an inpatient treatment facility for a gambling addiction. Simultaneously, ESPN reported that the NCAA was investigating Sorsby for "making thousands of online bets on a variety of sports" via a gambling app. Among the allegations is that Sorsby, while a member of the Indiana team in 2022, bet on the Hoosiers, which could jeopardize his eligibility with the Red Raiders.

Sorsby redshirted that year and played in only one game, but NCAA rules say athletes who wager on their own games or on other sports involving their own school can face permanent loss of eligibility.

According to NCAA guidelines updated in 2023, lesser but significant penalties are spelled out, depending on the degree of violation.

On3 Sports reported on April 29 that Sorsby had placed more than 10,000 wagers. The On3 report cited unnamed sources who had reviewed betting data linked to Sorsby since 2022. They found Sorsby had "placed bets across multiple states, using a range of gambling apps, including Hard Rock Bet, BetMGM, DraftKings, PrizePicks and bet365, among others."

NCAA rules allow athletes of legal age to wager on some pro sports, but not ones in which the NCAA sponsors a championship. On3's reporting found that Sorsby had wagered small amounts on balls and strikes at Cincinnati Reds games.

Sorsby transferred to Tech in January after playing for Indiana in 2022 and 2023 and for Cincinnati in 2024 and 2025. In 2024, he passed for 2,813 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 447 yards and 9 TDs. In 2025, he passed for 2,800 yards and 27 TDs and rushed for 580 yards and 9 TDs.

He threw four touchdowns passes in the Texas Tech spring game on April 18.
