T.L. Hanna will need a rally to win its first high school baseball state championship.

The Yellow Jackets lost 7-3 at home on May 27 against Chapin in the start of their SCHSL Class 5A Division 2 best-of-three series. They will try to stay alive in a 6:30 p.m. game May 28 at Chapin (22-9) and force a deciding game May 30 at a neutral site to be determined.

Two batters into the bottom of the first inning, T.L. Hanna (18-17) had two hits and a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets, however, had only one more hit the rest of the game. Cesar Ochoa’s second RBI single came in the seventh.

The Yellow Jackets went 6-9 in Region 5A to finish fifth but then won seven straight games in the postseason. They beat No. 1 seed Indian Land in the Upper State finals to reach the state championship for the third time, their first since 1988.

Southside Christian can win its fifth consecutive state championship 6 p.m. May 28 at home in Sabre Park against Oceanside Collegiate in the 3A finals.

The Sabres (23-8-1) won the opening game in the best-of-three series 7-2 on May 26 at Oceanside (24-10).

Jacob Wiggs started on the mound for Southside Christian and went 2⅔ innings with no runs, one hit and two strikeouts. He was 2-for-3 batting with a stolen base and two runs scored.

Staff ace Carson Boleman, a Wake Forest commit and top major league prospect, pitched 4⅓ innings of relief. He allowed two unearned runs on one hit and three walks with eight strikeouts.

Dorman ready to start 5A Division 1 series at home

After changes because of weather and field conditions, Dorman and James Island are scheduled for their best-of-three series in three days for the 5A Division 1 championship.

Dorman (29-2) will play host at 7 p.m. May 28; defending champion James Island (29-3) will be at home at 7 p.m. on May 29, and a third game would be May 30 at a neutral site.

The Cavaliers are looking for a fifth championship, the first since 2018. They also won in 1953, 1964 and 1971.
