ROEBUCK — Connor Wells stood at the mound, as he cocked his left arm back, then jolted it forward to deliver a perfect pitch.
”Strike,” the umpire yelled. And it was the third one, too.
Wells stared down the batter, and made sure he could hear him clearly. “Get out the box,” Wells hollered, as the batter solemnly strolled to the dugout.
The moment foreshadowed how the rest of the game would go, as Wells and Dorman baseball defeated James Island 9-4 on May 28 in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 5A-D1 state championship series at Dorman.
Game 2 is May 29 at 7 p.m. at James Island.
“It’s just a little competition,” Wells said, chuckling. “He was talking crap. So, I gave it to him.”
Wells, a 6-foot-6 junior LSU commitment, finished with six strikeouts and allowed two hits and one earned in 5 innings.
“The heat and humidity was tough, but he (Connor) always competes for us, and grinds it out,” Dorman coach Jack Jolly said. “To get us into the fifth inning was really, really big. I’m really proud of him.”
Wells has “compete” written inside the baseball cap he wears when he’s on the mound.
”That’s our motto, compete,” Wells said. “It’s all about listening to what coach tells us. Win the one pitch, win the one inning, win the one everything.”
Another top performer was Cavaliers freshman outfielder Carter Nash, who hit the only home run in the game.
“We’re playing a nameless, faceless opponent,” Nash said. “We can’t worry about who they are, we just have to play our game. And our game works.

“We have to just keep going. I want to make sure our seniors can win one more game.”
And despite the big-time victory, the Cavaliers expect the Trojans to come out swinging in Game 2.
“We’re playing a great team,” Jolly said. “They’re not going to give up. We have to keep the gas all the way down. Pedal to the metal, and keep playing as hard as we can. We’ll try to take care of business tomorrow.”
