Why Romeo Doubs Agreement Could Strengthen Patriots’ Hand In An A.J. Brown Trade originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriotsreportedly reached an agreement with Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs on Tuesday for a four-year contract worth up to $80 million.
As the Patriots look to solidify their receiving corps, they may shift their attention to the possibility of trading for Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown. While Doubs is more suited to a No. 2 receiver role rather than a primary target, it still makes sense for New England to consider acquiring Brown to strengthen its top receiving option, and it might have the leverage to do it.
The Eagles appear to be playing hard to get regarding a trade involving Brown. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, he stated on Thursday that he doesn't believe Philadelphia will part ways with Brown unless a first-round pick is included in the deal.
The first-round pick likely wouldn't be the only component of the deal; there would probably be a Day 2 pick involved, and maybe even a Day 3 pick, which could come in the 2026 and 2027 NFL Drafts.
With the Patriots securing a deal with Doubs, there could be added pressure on the Eagles to reduce their asking price for Brown. New England might hold the upper hand in any potential trade if Philadelphia is seriously considering shopping Brown and is keen on moving him off its roster for the upcoming season.
There aren't many realistic trade options available for Brown since the Baltimore Ravens have already dealt their 2026 and 2027 first-round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Maxx Crosby. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement with veteran free agent wide receiver Mike Evans. The Los Angeles Chargers may be hesitant to give up assets for another wide receiver, especially considering they already have Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston on their roster.
The Kansas City Chiefs could be in the mix since they need a top-tier wide receiver and have two first-round picks this season. However, if they aren't interested, the Patriots might be Brown's only viable landing spot.
New England would likely still have to give up a first-round pick for Brown, but this move could prompt the Eagles to lower their asking price for other draft picks. The Patriots could argue that they are already in a good position with Doubs added to their roster, which would allow them to avoid overpaying for Brown. They have plenty of draft capital to find wide receivers in the upcoming draft.
