It's not big news, but it does remove a bit of depth from the Phillies' pitching ranks.

Why did the Phillies trade Trevor Richards?
The Phillies simply must've felt that Richards didn't factor into their future plans enough to maintain a spot on the 40-man roster.
Richards did pitch in two outings (4.1 innings) this season so far at the MLB level for Philadelphia, putting up a 2.08 ERA and striking out five hitters.
He was a mixed bag in limited MLB action in 2025, putting up a 12.00 ERA in three outings with the Royals but then a 3.38 ERA in two appearances with the Diamondbacks.
In his nine-year MLB career, Richards has a 4.52 ERA with stops also in Tampa Bay, Miami, Toronto, Milwaukee and Minnesota.
Richards, a former starter, seems to be in good form right now. At Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he's thrown in nine games (14.0 innings) out of the bullpen with a 1.93 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
The White Sox get a low cost addition to their bullpen with some experience -- Richards turns 33 on May 15.
The Phillies move in a different direction with the fringes of their pitching staff.
