The Philadelphia Phillies had a major need in their bullpen this season, and it needed to be addressed at this year's trade deadline. But, with a weaker market and a few options already off the board, they needed to pivot.
Fortunately, they were able to acquire one in Caleb Killian with the San Francisco Giants, and shortly thereafter, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic, swung a trade with their rival, the New York Mets, for Brooks Raley.
So, why did the Phillies make a trade with their NL East division rival for the left-handed reliever? Well, the move for both sides makes a ton of sense.
Why Phillies are trading for Brooks Raley from Mets
"The Phillies are acquiring lefty reliever Brooks Raley in a trade with the New York Mets, league source confirms," Sammon reported Monday morning.
There are a few reasons why this trade makes sense for both teams. But briefly, for the Mets side of this deal, Raley is a free agent after this season, and it wouldn't make any sense to keep him.
While trading him to the Phillies might not be ideal, Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies likely made the best offer the Mets got for Raley, and trading him to Philadelphia was in the clubs' best interests.
Now, from the Phillies' perspective, adding Raley makes a ton of sense. They desperately needed bullpen help, and are getting just that in the veteran Raley.

According to Jayson Stark of The Athletic, the Phillies are sending right-handed pitcher Luke Gabrysh and outfielder John Spikerman to the Mets for Raley.
The 38-year-old left-hander has been great for the Mets this season, posting a 1.96 ERA, a 5-5 record, and 1.6 bWAR with 40 strikeouts and a 1.089 WHIP across 41.1 innings in 45 outings.
Raley, being a left-handed reliever, is a huge boost to the Phillies' bullpen, with the struggles from Jose Alvarado, Tanner Banks, Kyle Backhus, and others necessitating such a move.
Raley is a nice pickup for the Phillies' bullpen, and he didn't cost them too much to acquire either. He might be older, and a rental, but for the team's need, Raley makes perfect sense as their big reliever dealing acquisition this summer.
