Why Michael Malone cut ties with 5-star recruit that shocked UNC fans originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The North Carolina Tar Heels have decided to cut ties with Dylan Mingo, according to 247Sports.
The five-star 2026 recruit is ranked as a consensus top-ten blue-chip and committed to UNC under Hubert Davis. He's the brother of Kayden Mingo, who's currently in the transfer portal after leaving Penn State. Mingo initially picked North Carolina over Baylor, Penn State and Washington back in Feburary.
This seems to be part of the restructuring under new coach Michael Malone and wanting to find the right roster. The 6-foot-5 point guard from Long Island Lutheran High School (New York) missed most of the high school season because of an ankle injury. But Mingo was also named MVP of the NBA top 100 camp last summer after averaging 23.8 points, 6.8 assists and 6.5 rebounds.
With Mingo off the board for UNC, there is speculation this opens up room for top guard transfer Juke Harris to secure his spot with the Tar Heels. Malone and his staff met with the former Wake Forest product on Sunday in hopes to pry him away from Michigan, who's considered the front-runner in the situation.

Malone was able to retain top-25 recruit Maximo Adams, who will be headed to Chapel Hill in the fall. It's clear the roster rebuild at UNC is revolving around size. We'll see how the rest of the haul goes for the former NBA champion coach.
