Why Jazz Chisholm is wearing an AirPod while playing second base for Yankees originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. does indeed appear to be wearing an AirPod in his ear on Wednesday as the New York Yankees take on the Texas Rangers.
But this isn't Chisholm playing second base while listening to his favorite playlist.
While it's an odd look, it actually makes a lot of sense.

Why is Jazz Chisholm wearing an AirPod?
The simplest way of explaining it is this: PitchCom.
That's the means by which catchers and pitchers call the game in 2026 for the vast majority of partnerships. Someone pushes a button, and it announces the pitch call in the ear of whoever is attached to the system.
Most players wear a speaker in their hat to hear the calls.
It's not clear exactly why Chisholm doesn't do that, but he often has his hair pretty thick, and so maybe that impacts his chances of wearing the little speaker piece within his hat.
Instead, Chisholm is hearing the calls in his ear with what looks like an AirPod, or some other kind of equivalent headphone. It's visible near the end of this clip:

Middle infielders classically got to figure out the call by looking in and seeing the fingers the catcher put down.
Baseball has moved away from that to avoid sign stealing, and so now they've got this PitchCom speaker system.
For Chisholm to know what's coming, and slide himself around the infield accordingly, he's just doing it a bit differently by rocking the AirPod.
It has the added benefit of making Chisholm look cool, which he's already quite good at.
