NiJaree Canady is looking to extend Texas Tech softball's season to the very last possible day by forcing the if-necessary game of the Women's College World Series finals.

It's something Patrick Mahomes is looking to see in person as well.

In the middle of the second inning of Game 2 of the WCWS finals, with Canady in the circle, the former Texas Tech and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was shown by ESPN’s cameras in attendance at Devon Park alongside his wife, Brittany.

Texas-Texas Tech softball live updates: Score, highlights from WCWS Game 2

Texas Tech finds itself in the very same position it was in at this point of the season last year against Texas, as the Red Raiders dropped Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series. The Longhorns took Game 1 of the series 7-3 on Wednesday at Devon Park, with Kaitlyn Terry and Canady giving up five runs in the first inning.

If Texas Tech can beat Texas on Thursday, the Red Raiders and Longhorns will go the full distance of the championship series and play the winner-take-all if-necessary Game 3 on Friday, June 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

Here's what to know on why Mahomes is at the WCWS:

Why is Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech-Texas Women's College World Series championship?

Mahomes is simply in Oklahoma City to watch his alma mater play for its first-ever Women's College World Series title.

He was in attendance for last season's WCWS finals between Texas and Texas Tech as well. The Red Raiders and Longhorns are the first two teams since the WCWS championship went to a best-of-three series in 2005 that the same two teams have met up in the finals in back-to-back seasons.

Here's a look at Mahomes celebrating one of Canady's strikeouts in the second inning on Thursday:

Mahomes also has a connection with Canady. As noted by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, the Red Raiders ace is one of the several Texas Tech athletes who have an NIL deal with Team Mahomes, the NIL group started by the three-time Super Bowl champion through Adidas.

Where did Patrick Mahomes go to college?

Mahomes attended Texas Tech from 2014 through 2016, where he became one of the country's top passers by the time his junior year rolled through.

Over the course of his three seasons in Lubbock, Mahomes completed 63.5% of his passes for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns. He led the country in passing yards during his junior season, throwing for 5,052 passing yards in 12 games.

He was drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chiefs with the No. 10 overall pick, and the rest is history for his career in the NFL.
