For the second consecutive season, Texas softball is looking to be the last remaining team from the eight-team Women's College World Series field.

The second-seeded Longhorns are halfway to that achievement after taking Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series against No. 11 Texas Tech on June 3. The Longhorns beat the Red Raiders by a score of 7-3 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.

Texas took control of the game early with a five-run first inning — which featured Katie Stewart's 31st home run of the season — off NiJaree Canady and Kaitlyn Terry. Teagan Kavan commanded the circle as she threw a three-hit complete game while striking out six hitters.

Kavan and the Longhorns will now look to finish the WCWS finals undefeated in two games — something that has happened 11 times in the history of the WCWS finals since the adoption of the best-of-three championship series in 2005 — on June 4.

Should Texas finish the job, Mike White's squad will join an elite class of Division I softball programs that have won back-to-back national championships. There have only been four programs that have achieved the feat, with Oklahoma being the last to accomplish it.

How many WCWS titles does Texas softball have?

Texas has won the WCWS once in program history, which came last year. With Kavan and Reese Atwood leading the way, the Longhorns took two of three against Texas Tech to reach college softball's mountaintop for the first time. A win either June 4 or June 5 vs. the Red Raiders would move the Longhorns into a four-way tie with Florida, Texas A&M and Arizona State for the fourth-most WCWS titles, at two.

Texas Tech has not won a WCWS title before. The Red Raiders came close last season, but finished as the national runner-up to Texas.
