The Boston Celtics made a splash on the trade market on Tuesday.

The 2024 NBA champions sent Anfernee Simons to the Chicago Bulls for a two-time All-Star center.

“BREAKING: The Chicago Bulls are trading center Nikola Vucevic and a second-round pick to the Boston Celtics for Anfernee Simons and a second-round pick,” ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on X/twitter.

Why did the Celtics elect to make the move? Well, the answer is quite simple. Boston’s frontcourt is solid, but it wasn’t a championship-caliber unit before Tuesday’s trade (Neemias Queta and Luka Garza aren’t game-changing big men).

Acquiring Vucevic, a more impactful and experienced big man who’s been eager to join a franchise serious about competing for a title, will allow the Celtics to better position themselves for an eventful postseason.

Vucevic’s combination of exquisite low-post footwork and reliable perimeter shooting makes him the perfect frontcourt upgrade. The USC product is averaging 16.9 points and 9.0 rebounds with the Bulls this season, shooting 50.5% from the field and 37.6% from long range.

Although Simons has had his fair share of bright spots in a Celtics uniform, Boston comprehended that he was the asset that made the most sense to include in a deal for a franchise-elevating big man.
