Ashlinn James’ senior season didn’t end the way she had dreamed, but she received an exclusive consolation prize Sunday night.
The Assumption High School senior was named Kentucky’s Miss Basketball during a ceremony in Lexington.
The 5-foot-7 James, who has signed with Indiana University, averaged 14.9 points and 4.5 rebounds while leading Assumption to its first Seventh Region championship since 2007. The Rockets reached the Sweet 16 championship game before falling to George Rogers Clark 48-43.
Madison Central’s Jake Feldhaus, a Belmont University signee, was named Mr. Basketball.
James played six seasons of varsity basketball, starting as a seventh-grader at Eminence and then playing as an eighth-grader at Jeffersontown. She joined the varsity program at Manual as a freshman and played two seasons there before transferring to Assumption.
James scored 816 points over two seasons at Assumption and finished with 2,208 points over her six-year varsity career. This season she shot 44% from the field and 71.7% from the free-throw line.
James is the second Miss Basketball winner from Assumption, joining Jenni Benningfield in 2000. She’s also the second straight winner from a Louisville school after Sacred Heart’s ZaKiyah Johnson won the award last year.

The 6-8 Feldhaus averaged 20.7 points, 13 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 blocks for a Madison Central team that finished 30-4 after falling to Frederick Douglass in the semifinals of the 11th Region Tournament.
Feldhaus shot 57.6% from the field and 68.8% from the free-throw line and also was named Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year. He played two seasons at Mason County before transferring to Madison Central before his junior season. He finished his career with 1,864 points.
Feldhaus is the son of former University of Kentucky player Deron Feldhaus and the nephew of Madison Central coach Allen Feldhaus Jr.
