NEW YORK — It’s coming up on three months since Giancarlo Stanton felt some calf discomfort jogging from first base to second base on a Jazz Chisholm walk and the Yankees still don’t have even a ballpark idea for a return.
The often-injured designated hitter is running again after a setback in June shut him down for a while, but he hasn’t yet run the bases.
Initially, the Yankees were hopeful that Stanton would avoid even needing to be placed on the 10-day injured list, then when that occurred three days after he left an April 25 game in Houston, his calf strain was categorized “low grade.”
As we’ve seen through the years with Stanton, who has been on the IL at least once every season since 2018, quick healing is not his thing. By missing Wednesday’s day-night doubleheader against the Pirates, he’s been sidelined for 76 games.

Here’s the latest update from manager Aaron Boone, who addressed Stanton before Wednesday’s opener:
“He’s in his running progression now. I don’t have a timeline. I don’t know when he gets to the end of that and then what we do to get him back. But I feel like he’s moving in a good direction.
“I just don’t know if that’s a couple weeks from now, a few weeks from now, whatever it is. But he is getting much closer to that point.”
Stanton still has hurdles before being cleared to start seeing game action in minor-league games on a rehab assignment.
“I think he’s a couple weeks now into running, but he’s got to get to a point where he’s getting to a certain speed point and then obviously bouncing back and recovering,” Boone added. “So when that is, I can’t quite answer that. But he is running, so I think based on that, it shouldn’t be too far off.“
Stanton, 36, hit .256 with three homers, 14 RBI and a .724 OPS in 24 games before going on the IL.
The five-time All-Star and 2017 NL MVP is in the 12th season of a 13-year, $325 million contract that he signed with the Marlins in November 2014.
Miami is paying $10 million of his $29 million 2026 salary and $10 million of his $25 million 2027 salary. The Marlins also are on the hook for a $10-million buyout if the slugger’s $25-million club option for 2028 isn’t vested.
