The Wright State Raiders are back in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, one of four Ohio schools in the field, and are set to face the Virginia Cavaliers in a first-round game on Friday, March 20.

No. 3 seed Virginia comes in with a 29-5 (15-3 ACC) while No. 14 Wright State enters at 23-11 overall (15-5 Horizon League). Wright State is back in the dance for the first time since 2022 and is making its fifth March Madness trip overall. The winner advances to the second round to face either No. 6 seed Tennessee or No. 11 seed Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, March 22.

Wright State vs. Virginia — where exactly is Virginia located?​

The University of Virginia (UVA) is located in the central part of the state in Charlottesville, which is southwest of Washington, D.C., and northwest of Richmond. The university has more than 26,000 students enrolled as of fall 2025. UVA is meeting Wright State for the first time, according to the school's official site.

Virginia won the 2019 NCAA tournament title. A year earlier, the Cavaliers made history by becoming the first No. 1 seed to lose a first round game to a No. 16. Current UVA coach Ryan Odom coached the University of Maryland-Baltimore County team that pulled off the upset.

WSU, located northeast of downtown Dayton near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, enrolls just under 12,000 students, according to the school's website.

Head coach Clint Sargent is in his second season leading Wright State's men's basketball team and has a 38-29 record overall. Sargent served as a WSU assistant coach starting in 2016-17 before being named head coach.
