The Boston Red Sox entered play on Tuesday at 27-37, and are not living up to expectations.

The Red Sox made the postseason last year, and after a busy offseason, they came into the season with expectations to be even better. They added Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Ranger Suarez, Caleb Durbin and Johan Ovideo in the winter, but they are somehow sitting 10 games below .500.

Some of the Red Sox's players got off to slow starts and underperformed. Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet's injuries certainly did not help, but things are not over for the Red Sox. They are 4 1/2 games out of a wild card spot right now, and have time to get back on track. The American League is weak this year, and many fans might forget that they were not playing great baseball early last season either.

The Red Sox were 30-34 through 64 games last season. They were below .500, but not quite as bad as this year. However, they were just four games back of a wild card spot at this point last season.

The Red Sox are only an additional half game back from a wild card spot than they were last year. They are benefiting from a weaker American League, but they can do what they did last season and play better down the stretch to make the postseason. Being 10 games below .500 is daunting, but it's still too early to give up on the season.
