Pat Fitzgerald is not a top 50 head coach in the country, according to Sporting News.
Sporting News has released their annual rankings of head coaches, with the Spartans' new leader falling just outside the top 50 in the sport. Of the 138 coaches included in the rankings, Fitzgerald came in at No. 52 -- so just two spots shy of the top 50.
Among his Big Ten peers, Fitzgerald came in ranked at No. 15 out of the 18 head coaches in the league. He was ahead of only Purdue's Barry Odom (No. 64), Maryland's Mike Locksley (No. 58) and UCLA's Bob Chesney (No. 57). Fitzgerald was one spot behind Rutgers' Greg Schiano as well.
Fitzgerald comes to Michigan State after being arguably the most successful coach at Northwestern from 2006 to 2022. He held a record of 110-101 with a pair of Big Ten West Division championships during his time leading the Wildcats. Northwestern dropped off during the final few years under Fitzgerald, which would explain why maybe he was ranked as low as he was in this poll, but the hope at Michigan State is that he'll be able to rekindle the success he once had with more resources and financial backing from the university than he ever got at Northwestern.
