When will Cale Makar return? Injury timeline and more about Avalanche star's status vs. Golden Knights originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Colorado Avalanche at times looked too big to fail this season, and that continued into the playoffs with eight wins in their first nine games to start their quest for their second Stanley Cup of the decade.
An injury to star defenseman Cale Makar, however, proved to be a major problem in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final. The Avalanche couldn't make up an early 3-0 deficit, letting the Vegas Golden Knights steal one in Denver to deliver the first blow of the series.
The Avalanche might need Makar back sooner rather than later if they want to complete their run to the Cup and avoid an upset at the hands of John Tortorella's squad.
Here's what you need to know about Makar's injury and when he could return.

What is Cale Makar's injury?
The Avalanche are keeping details close to the vest, as is typically the case in the NHL, but Makar appears to be dealing with an upper-body injury. He appeared to injure his shoulder, or aggravate a previous injury, in Colorado's series-clinching win over the Minnesota Wild on May 13.

While Makar returned to the ice during the game, he missed practices before the Avalanche started the Western Conference Final and missed a Game 1 loss to Vegas.

When will Cale Makar return?
Makar was ruled out for Game 2, and there is no indication of when he might return.
The Avalanche have continued to list Makar as day-to-day and didn't rule him out for Game 2 until about eight hours before puck drop, so there appears to be a chance for a return in Game 3, but Colorado has been guarded about his status.
Makar did participate in most of the team's practice on Friday, though he spoke with trainers and went back to the locker room before it ended.
