Cale Makar has a case as the best defenseman on the planet.

He's certainly a big part of the reason the Colorado Avalanche are still in contention to win this season's Stanley Cup.

But the news on Wednesday, that Makar has an injury, is a big issue for the Avs.

He's already been ruled out for Game 1 of the Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Jack Ahcan is the player who will dress with Makar out, and the defensive pairings will have to be shuffled around.

So far in this postseason, Makar had four goals and an assist through nine games.

He played 29 shifts in the Avalanche's comeback win over the Wild in the previous round to win that series, a normal amount of ice time, not suggesting any injury.

But at least for now, Makar is out.

At the moment, Colorado has termed Makar to be "day-to-day."

As some will say in jest: Aren't we all?

But in all seriousness, that's all we know. The details about Makar's injury are being kept under wraps. It's not totally clear when it happened, either.

That makes it tough to truly speculate.

The suggestion of a day-to-day verdict is that Makar could be back any time in this series. But given that he's not playing Game 1, it's certainly more than nothing.
