The Milwaukee Bucks dropped Game 1 of their seven-game, first-round NBA playoff series against the Indiana Pacers on April 19, but they can get right off the mat April 22 and even the series in Indianapolis?

Will Damian Lillard play in Bucks vs Pacers Game 2?

Bucks coach Doc Rivers didn't confirm that Lillard would be available in Game 2, though Lillard was upgraded to questionable on the first injury report.

"It's more them, the doctors, than him," Rivers said. "He's close. He looks great to me. But he's getting close."

Lillard hasn't played in a game since March 18 after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or a blood clot, in his right calf.

The team announced he had been cleared of the blood clot last week and anticipated that Lillard would return to play once he felt in basketball shape.

How have the Bucks fared when they lose Game 1 of a playoff series?

Last year's Bucks won the opener between the two teams easily, 109-94, before falling in four of the next five. In recent years:

  • In 2023, the Bucks lost Game 1 to Miami and evened the series at 1-1 but lost in five.
  • In 2022, the Bucks won Game 1 in both playoff series; they beat Chicago in five games and lost to Boston in seven.
  • In 2021, the Bucks lost Game 1 in three of the four series they played that year en route to the NBA title. They fell behind, 2-0, to both Brooklyn and Phoenix before winning those series (in seven and six games, respectively). They also went down to Atlanta, 1-0, before winning the series in six.
  • In 2020, they lost Game 1 in both playoff series. The Bucks bounced back to beat Orlando in five but lost to Miami in five.
  • In 2019, the Bucks lost to Boston in Game 1, and analyst Paul Pierce famously said "I think it's over," believing the Celtics were going to prevail. Milwaukee won the next four. But Milwaukee also beat Toronto in Game 1 in the Eastern Conference finals and lost in six.
  • In 2018, the Bucks fell behind Boston, 2-0, and lost in seven games.
  • In 2017, the Bucks defeated the Raptors in Game 1, then lost the series in six games.
  • All told, since the Bucks began their current streak of playoff appearances in 2017, the team that has won Game 1 of a playoff series featuring the Bucks is just 6-9. The Bucks themselves are 5-4 since 2017 when they lose Game 1.
