OXFORD — It won't be in his usual spot, but Ole Miss baseball pitcher Cade Townsend will make a start against Mississippi State.

Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco revealed the plan for the rest of the series on March 27, after the No. 18 Rebels lost 5-4 to No. 4 Mississippi State at Swayze Field.

Hudson Calhoun (1-1, 3.60 ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the Rebels (19-8, 3-4 SEC) on March 28 (1:30 p.m., SEC Network+).

Townsend, who has been the No. 2 pitcher in the Ole Miss weekend rotation, will pitch the third game of the series against MSU (22-4, 5-2) on March 29 (3 p.m., SEC Network).

Bianco said Townsend, who hasn't pitched since exiting a March 14 game at Texas with shoulder soreness, has been feeling good. The move to Game 3 was to increase his rest.

"(Townsend) threw a bullpen, and it really turned into a live bullpen where he faced a couple hitters Sunday," Bianco said.

Townsend was off to a fantastic start before the injury. He is 2-0 with a 0.92 ERA. He has 32 strikeouts and just seven walks in his four starts.

Getting Townsend back for the weekend is a big bump for the Rebels, especially because some top arms were used in the loss on March 27. Ole Miss ace Hunter Elliott pitched 5⅓ innings and Taylor Rabe, a top reliver, pitched 2⅔ innings.

The loss in the opener went on Rabe's record. After a three-run home run from Austin Fawley in the seventh inning gave Ole Miss a 4-3 lead, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the ninth that were charged to Rabe (3-1).

"It was a tough night for us, but all of a sudden it looked like we were going to win on a couple homers," Bianco said. "Just unable to finish it at the end."

Mike Bianco gives Marko Sipila injury update

Bianco also detailed an injury wrinkle that complicates the Ole Miss bullpen.

Marko Sipila, a senior transfer from San Diego State, is injured. Like Townsend, Sipila has not pitched since March 14 at Texas. He has gotten an MRI.

Sipila has four appearances, no decisions and a 4.50 ERA.

"(Sipila is) having some elbow soreness," Bianco said. "I say elbow, might be more forearm. MRI and there's still doctors talking. Hopefully we know more to come on that."
