Sunlight shines onto the SEC logo on an Ole Miss uniform during a college baseball game between Ole Miss and Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Ole Miss defeated Southern Miss 10-3. | Ayrton Breckenridge/Clarion Ledger / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images
It’s Hoover time ladies and gents. One of the best events in all of college sports gets underway on Tuesday and besides the regular shenanigans that can go on in a tournament of this caliber, Mother Nature is set to have a say in this one.
For Ole Miss, the path could not have been any worse, but that’s what happens when you drop games earlier in the season that you should not have. Sure, you get the worst team in the SEC round one when you play Missouri, but the task beyond that just is not fun.
Assuming the Rebels move beyond Mizzou, Mississippi State awaits in round two. The same State team that beat you four times already this season. If that wasn’t enough, the top seeded Georgia Bulldogs are around the corner in round three. The Rebels dropped that series 1-2 at home a month ago.
It will be interesting to see how Bianco opts to roll out his starters. To win this tournament, the Rebels will have to win five games in six days. It is likely whoever throws on Tuesday in round one will go again in the championship. It is also possible to have the Game 1 starter go on short rest and pitch Saturday in Game 4 and the Game 2 starter pitch the championship game on Sunday.
Do you throw Cade Townsend first, hoping the Rebel offense can put up runs in bunches and allow Bianco to keep his pitch count down, making him available again on Saturday? Despite Hunter Elliott’s struggles this season, does he get the opportunity for two starts or will it be Taylor Rabe? Perhaps Will Libbert is a candidate for the Mizzou game, pushing Townsend to a Wednesday/Sunday schedule and only asking Elliott and Rabe to give you all they got in between there.
