OXFORD — A decision has yet to be made if Ole Miss baseball baseball's Cade Townsend will pitch in his usual spot in the starting rotation on March 20.
The No. 24 Rebels (18-5, 2-2 SEC) host No. 18 Kentucky (18-3, 3-1) on March 20 (6:30 p.m., SEC Network+). Townsend, who has been the No. 2 starter, is questionable with a shoulder injury.
Speaking after Ole Miss' 5-0 win in the opening game on March 19, coach Mike Bianco said Townsend has progressed since he injured his shoulder on March 14 against Texas. Townsend was pulled from the game after throwing a pitch with an awkward release in the second inning.
"He's gotten better each time that he's thrown," Bianco said. "He touched the mound a little bit and spun the ball today."
Bianco said he was planning to talk with pitching coach Joel Mangrum and come to a decision of who to throw.
"We'll talk here in a few minutes and hopefully decide something tonight or early tomorrow morning," Bianco said.
Ole Miss has Townsend listed as day-to-day.
"The MRI came back clean and showed mild inflammation in his shoulder," Ole Miss said in a school release. "Cade will begin rehab and throwing today and will progress day-by-day.”
Hudson Calhoun is a candidate to get the start if Townsend can't go. Calhoun is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA. Wil Libbert is projected to pitch March 21 in his usual spot as the third weekend starter
Getting Townsend back healthy is key for the Rebels. The start against Texas has marred an incredible statistical start to the sophomore's season.
Townsend is 4-1 with a 0.92 ERA and 32 strikeouts. He has allowed two earned runs and seven walks over 19.2 innings, but one of the runs and three of the walks were in the game he was injured.
