Day two of the CIAC girls basketball tournaments is complete, signaling the end of the first rounds in the Division II and IV tournaments.
Here is the full schedule and scoreboard.
Let's take a look at what happened around Connecticut:
Tech Victory
In the Division IV tournament No. 6 Kaynor Tech earned its first CIAC playoff victory in nearly 10 years, taking down No. 27 Windsor Locks 51-47. Freshman Bella Giampetruzzi and senior Shaniya Dunbar both scored 21 points for Kaynor. Giampetruzzi had six rebounds and seven steals while Dunbar had eight rebounds and 11 steals. Kaynor Tech will host No. 11 Lauralton Hall in the second round.
Big Upcoming Matchups
Division II is arguably the most competitive girls basketball tournament this year, and after the first round there is a lot to look forward to in the next round.
Rocky Hill, ranked No. 4 in the GametimeCT girls basketball poll, will face ECC champion New London. The No. 6 ranked team in the GametimeCT poll, Trumbull, will get a rematch against West Haven. The No. 7 ranked team Staples will play FCIAC opponent Fairfield Warde.
SWC champion Notre Dame Prep will face SCC runner-up and defending state champion Sheehan in the second round and SWC runner up Bethel will face Enfield. ECC runner-up Ledyard will play against the FCIAC's Stamford as well.
As Scott Ericson said, "there are likely to be quarterfinal games worthy of being played at Mohegan Sun for a championship."
Seeded Upsets
There were several seeded upsets during the opening rounds of the Division II and IV tournaments.
In the Division IV tournament there were six seeded upsets in total.
No. 24 Immaculate upset No. 9 Nonnewaug 53-51, holding off a fourth quarter comeback attempt. Immaculate was led by Maggi Mottola, who scored 14 points. Ciara Whitmore added 11 points, Elise Van Brakel had 10 and Hayden Sibilia scored nine points for the Mustangs in the victory.
No. 21 Oxford pulled off the upset 62-33 victory over No. 12 Bolton and will face No. 5 Plainfield next. Oxford was led by Rachel Florin, who scored 19 points.
No. 25 Tolland nearly upset No. 8 Canton, taking the game to double overtime before falling 46-44.
In Division II, No. 17 New London defeated No. 16 Windsor 37-28 and will face No. 1 Rocky Hill in the second round.
No. 27 Fairfield Ludlowe pulled off the upset 76-55 victory against No. 6 North Haven and will face No. 11 South Windsor next.
Shining Stars
Riley Barrett, Lauralton Hall: Scored nine points and had six steals, seven rebounds, and four assists to help lead No. 11 Lauralton Hall past No. 22 Northwestern 55-20 in the Division IV tournament.
Sophia Hoinsky, Stonington: Scored 28 points and had 22 rebounds in No. 7 Stonington's 63-35 win over No. 26 Somers in the Division IV tournament.
Noelle Lawrence, West Haven: Scored 20 points with six rebounds, four steals and three assists in No. 15 West Haven's 46-26 win over No. 18 Newtown in Division II.
Addie Talbott, Staples: Scored 14 points with eight rebounds and four assists as No. 3 Staples defeated No. 30 Lyman Hall 59-30 in Division II.
Lucy Walker, Waterford:Scored 19 points and added 19 rebounds as No. 14 Waterford defeated No. 19 Career Magnet 61-38 in the Division IV tournament.
