As spring and summer family attractions go, attending a Wilmington Blue Rocks game is among Delaware’s more appealing.

Baseball isn’t the only lure, though that’s the game that’s being played.

The Blue Rocks are members of the high-Class A South Atlantic League on the minor-league baseball ladder, meaning their players are three steps from the major leagues.

Most won’t make it, but some will. One of the attractions of a visit to Judy Johnson Field at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium on the Wilmington Riverfront is to be able to later say, “I saw that guy when he was on the way up.”

Two 2026 Baseball Hall of Fame inductees played there – Carlos Beltran as a Blue Rock in 1997, 1998 and 2000 and Andruw Jones visiting with the Braves’ Durham Bulls affiliate in 1996.

But it’s not just about balls and strikes or swings and misses. The Blue Rocks know that the entertainment goes beyond the diamond, which is why theme nights, giveaways and between-innings contests are also the norm.

Pups in the park, when fans can bring dogs to the game, Friday night fireworks and the dizzy bat race are long-time favorites. Opportunities for kids to run the bases or fans having a catch on the field also dot the promotional schedule.

How to get tickets?

Frawley Stadium’s capacity is more than 6,400, providing an intimate setting without a bad seat in the house. Gates open 45 minutes before first pitch, except on Sundays when it’s one hour.

The Blue Rocks have 70 home games with six-game series typically running Tuesday through Sunday.

Game tickets are available at milb.com/wilmington/tickets/single-game-tickets. Costs are $14 for general admission, $16 for upper-box seats and $19 for field-box seats.

They can also be purchased by calling 302-888-BLUE or at stadium ticket windows before games.

Group outings with 20 to 99 tickets, or at least 100 tickets, have lower prices.

Frawley Stadium also has the Diamond Club behind home plate that fits up to 85 and neighboring luxury suites seating 20 that rim the stadium and provide an ideal viewing perspective in a climate-controlled environment with food and beverages.

For those who prefer an outdoor setting, the stadium’s two picnic areas, located down the left- and right-field lines, also provide seating for groups of 25 or more

Call 302-888-5358 to reserve any of those.

Want a history lesson?

This is the 33rd season of the modern Blue Rocks, who are the second coming of an earlier team with the same name.

The original Blue Rocks played in the Interstate League from 1940-52 and were affiliated with the Philadelphia Athletics and then the Philadelphia Phillies.

Frawley Stadium opened in 1993 and the new Blue Rocks won five high-A Carolina League titles through 2019. They were a Kansas City Royals affiliate for all but two of those 27 years.

Minor-league baseball was shut down by COVID in 2020. The Blue Rocks returned in 2021 as a Washington Nationals affiliate, still at the high-A level, after Major League Baseball took over operations and pared down the minors in between.

The Blue Rocks’ South Atlantic League rivals include Phillies, Mets, Yankees and Orioles farm teams, giving fans of those nearby teams a chance to see their prospects.

What can and can’t you bring?

Bags may be brought into the stadium but can’t be bigger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches. Fanny packs and clutch purses have a 5- by 7-inch max.

Only one bag person.

Outside food and beverages are also not permitted.

What to eat and drink?

The stadium’s two main concessions stands offer ballpark staples such as hot dogs, chicken tenders, fries, popcorn and beverages.

The Chickie’s and Pete’s near the right-field picnic area provides more tasty grilled options while traditionalists still relish the Grotto’s Pizza stand on the concourse behind home plate

Many alcoholic beverage options are available to fans including Dogfish Head beer and cocktail cans, Surfside’s popular vodka-infused lemonade and iced tea and Twisted Tea’s many offerings.

Who is this Mr. Celery guy?

Mr. Celery emerges from behind that backstop every time the Blue Rocks score a run to celebrate with a short little gallop, maybe a quick dance.

This versatile and agile stalk has frequently been named among the best or oddest mascots in minor-league baseball, where fans appreciate silly traditions.

He isn’t actually the Blue Rocks’ mascot though, as that official title has long belonged to Rocky Bluewinkle, a moose who can actually walk on two legs and whose soft, furry exterior attracts hugs from youngsters.

What about parking?

It’s free in stadium lots. But tailgating is not permitted.

Want gear?

Visit the JP Morgan Chase Quarry Team Store, located on the concourse behind home plate, during games or via the web anytime.
