COLUMBIA — South Carolina baseball officially hired Kevin Schnall from Coastal Carolina on June 10.
This move comes after South Carolina announced on March 21 that coach Paul Mainieri would not finish his second season with the program.
Interim coach Monte Lee, pitching coach Terry Rooney and assistant coach John Hendry were fired on May 21, after the season ended.
Here's what to know about Schnall.
Schnall, 49, was an assistant at Coastal Carolina from 2001-12, spent two seasons as an assistant at Central Florida from 2013-15 then returned to Coastal as an associate head coach from 2016-24. He was promoted to head coach for the 2025 season.
In 2020 before the season was shut down due to COVID-19 pandemic, Schnall was the acting head coach when Gary Gilmore was dealing with health issues. Schnall went 11-5 in those games.
Schnall's career record at Coastal Carolina is 93-36.
In his first season as coach, the Chanticleers went 56–13 and finished as runnerup to LSU in the College World Series.
Coastal Carolina set a record for program wins and won the Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships. He was named the 2025 National Coach of the Year by Baseball America.
Coastal Carolina went 37-23 this season and was eliminated by Florida State in the NCAA Tournament on May 30.
Schnall is from Mercerville, New Jersey. He played catcher at Coastal Carolina from 1995-99. In 1999 was named the Big South Conference Player of the Year and was selected in the 25th round of the MLB draft by Cincinnati. He played two seasons in the minors.
He and his wife Megan have two daughters named Sydney and Fallon and a son named Jayden.
Schnall never was a coach in a game against the Gamecocks. South Carolina and Coastal haven't played each other since 2016.
Coastal has played Clemson four times the past two seasons and Schnall is 3-1 against the Tigers across two games in 2025 and two in 2026.
