COLUMBIA — South Carolina had an in-person meeting with Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall regarding the baseball coaching vacancy, according to a report from On3.

On3's Jamie Bradford reported June 5 that Schnall had a Zoom interview with the school last week and an in-person meeting on June 4.

“Multiple sources told us in recent days that they would expect a resolution between Schnall and the Gamecocks fairly quickly after the parties met," Bradford wrote. "Additionally, a source informed us that South Carolina did meet with another candidate for their opening on Wednesday. That candidate was not Schnall.”

Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball reported May 29 that the two leading candidates for the job "barring a last-second surprise" were Schnall and West Virginia's Steve Sabins. Sabins' season is still going on with WVU in a super regional beginning June 5. Coastal lost on May 30 in the Tallahassee Regional.

Schnall has been linked to the job ever since Paul Mainieri coached his last game on March 21. Mainieri went 28-29 and 6-24 in SEC play in his first season in 2025, which marked the worst conference record in program history.

After South Carolina started this season 12-11 overall and 0-4 in SEC play, the school announced March 21 that Mainieri would not return, and interim coach Monte Lee took over.

The Gamecocks finished 22-35, 7-23 and their 13-game losing streak is the longest for the program since 1961. South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati fired Lee and two other assistants on May 21.

Schnall, 49, was promoted to head coach beginning with the 2025 season after spending most of his career as an assistant for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina was the national runnerup in Schnall's first season.

Coastal Carolina AD not expecting Kevin Schnall to leave for South Carolina

Hours before the reported meeting between South Carolina and Schnall, WBTW News13 aired a sit down interview with Coastal Carolina athletic director Chance Miller.

Miller said June 4 he was talking to Schnall about building a roster for next year and getting back to the College World Series.

"I'm not planning on Kevin Schnall leaving, I'm planning on Kevin Schnall being the coach for a long time," Miller told WBTW News13.
