The Jaylen Brown era in Boston is over.

The Celtics traded the superstar guard to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks.

The news comes after weeks of rumors that involved Brown, including a blockbuster that would have brought Giannis Antetokounmpo to Boston. The Milwaukee Bucks instead sent the star forward to the Miami Heat.

Here’s what they’re saying around the NBA after the massive trade.

The Athletic

“The third pick in 2016, Brown did little but win in Boston, reaching the playoffs in each of his 10 seasons with the team. No other franchise won more playoff games than the Celtics did during Brown’s tenure. With him, they advanced to the conference finals six times and the NBA Finals twice. He won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award while helping the team end a 16-year championship drought. The Celtics were expected to experience a significant falloff after serious changes last offseason, but, with determined leadership and career-best production, Brown helped them defy expectations throughout a 56-win regular season.”

Bleacher Report

“Trading Brown never previously seemed like a wise option. The 29-year-old is a four-time All-Star and two-way dynamo who was both the Eastern Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP during the team’s championship season in 2023-24. And he was superb in the 2025-26 campaign, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while leading Boston to a 56-26 record.

“The argument has often been that Tatum is Boston’s best player, but Brown isn’t far behind, if at all.”

CBS Sports

“For much of the past two years, Philadelphia’s destiny was tied to two aging and injury-prone players. George has played just 78 regular-season games over two seasons with the 76ers, and he is entering his age-36 season. Coupled with the frequent absences of Embiid, Philadelphia appeared to be stuck with two supermax contracts that were aging badly.

“But George, following a 25-game suspension, returned to finish out the season strong. He averaged an efficient 17.4 points per game in the playoff series win over the Celtics, and now, he’s headed to Boston to serve as their Brown replacement. With Brown only 29 years old, the 76ers have improved at the forward spot with a player six years younger than the one that they sent out. ”

Yahoo Sports

“Brown will now get to team up with star Joel Embiid and point guard Tyrese Maxey. That duo, along with George and VJ Edgecombe, got the 76ers to match what has been their deepest postseason run in decades. The franchise, however, hasn’t made it to the Eastern Conference finals since 2001, when they fell in the NBA Finals with Allen Iverson.

“The trade comes at a curious time for Brown and the Celtics. With Jayson Tatum recovering from an Achilles injury for the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, the Celtics were expected to take a big step back. But Brown took his game to another level, averaging a career-high 28.7 points per game with Tatum sidelined and leading the team to a No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.”

Sports Illustrated

“While George is a solid player, he is past his prime and didn’t come close to Brown’s production in the 2025-26 season. Boston gained some draft capital that could help it facilitate another move, but the downgrade from Brown to George is hard to look past.

“Brown was an All-NBA performer in the 2025-26 season, leading the C’s to the No. 2 seed in the East even though Jayson Tatum missed most of the campaign. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from 3.”

NBC Sports Boston

“Yet with the Celtics blowing a 3-1 lead to the seventh-seeded Sixers in the postseason, Brad Stevens and the front office clearly sought a massive shakeup on the roster this summer. That appeared to have been manifesting itself in the form of a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, but the Bucks opted to make that deal with the Miami Heat instead of Boston. Instead, Stevens resorted to shipping Brown to the team that ended the Celtics’ season.”

Field Yates, ESPN

“As a Celtics fan, I cannot figure out this trade (obviously). But shout out Jaylen Brown. It was a blast watching him for a decade become one of the best players in the league and a Finals MVP.He brought it on both ends every damn night. He’s an all time Celtic whose number will hang in the rafters.”

Brett Siegel, ClutchPoints

“The Celtics could’ve had Giannis for Jaylen Brown, two unprotected first-round picks, and one of their younger guys like Hugo Gonzalez.

“Instead, they get Paul George for Brown...

“None of this makes any sense for the Celtics, who have clearly taken a massive step back.”
