After missing out on the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes last week, the Boston Celtics stunned the NBA by trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two future first-round picks, and two future second-round picks.
The trade was baffling for many Celtics fans, considering Brown is coming off the best individual season of his NBA career. Throughout his 10-year tenure in Beantown, Brown won one NBA championship, one Finals MVP, and was a five-time All-Star.
According to reports, the Celtics wanted to get VJ Edgecombe, but the 76ers said no. Instead, they ended up with an aging role player and future draft picks, and the move didn’t exactly improve their cap situation.
With this move, the Celtics are likely a play-in team next season, as their playoff ceiling has dipped considerably. This isn’t the case for the 76ers, who now have a robust core of Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid.

The Boston Celtics will need Jayson Tatum to replicate Jaylen Brown’s 2025-26 campaign (or close to it) to be relevant in the Eastern Conference. The six-time All-Star is expected to be the team’s top creative hub, with Derrick White likely the second option, and Payton Pritchard and Paul George being additional secondary shot creators.
For all his solid work on the defensive end, White must rediscover his shooting stroke to keep the Celtics afloat. Last season, the one-time NBA champion shot a woeful 32.7 percent in the regular season and 27.3 percent in the postseason from three-point range.
With Brown on the move, Baylor Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, Ron Harper Jr., and Hugo Gonzalez will assume bigger roles. Furthermore, Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and Mitchell Robinson will compete for minutes, and they bring something different to the center position.
