The Boston Celtics finally pulled the trigger on a Jaylen Brown trade, sending their 2024 NBA Finals MVP to the rival Philadelphia 76ers for a package that includes nine-time all-star Paul George, per reports.
The writing was on the wall about Brown's exit the moment Boston originally tried to deal him to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was traded to the Miami Heat instead. The Celtics bounce back with a deal that doesn't figure to make them nearly as competitive as the previous deal.
Philadelphia, though, comes away with a 29-year-old star in his prime who can help usher in the post-Process era. But did they win this deal?
76ers get: Jaylen Brown
Celtics get: Paul George, 2 first-round picks (2028, 2031), 2 second-round picks
With George due over $100 million the next two years (assuming he opts into the final year next offseason), Philadelphia did good to swap the 36-year-old for someone similar to a younger version of himself. And all the Sixers had to give up was two likely late first-round picks to upgrade and infuse more youth into a team that won 45 games and upset the Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.

Boston cornered itself into a space where it almost had to deal Brown, and this wasn't an optimal outcome considering what they were originally swinging for. To go from Giannis Antetokounmpo to Paul George is a tough fallback, even if George is a great fit next to Jayson Tatum and the rest of Boston's 3-point shooting lineup.
The first-round draft picks are fine, and the 2028 pick could convert to a swap more favorable for Boston. But with Philly projected to be competitive going forward, they won't likely be high picks. This is a pitiful return for the Celtics.
