WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Westwood came out fast and firing in the first round of the 69th Bergen County Jamboree.

“That’s the best game we’ve played this year,” coach Rob Carcich said after the Cardinals’ 72-44 boys’ basketball victory over Waldwick on Jan. 29.

Senior Joe Cerritelli hit five of his six 3-pointers in the first half and scored a game-high 24, one shy of his career high, to lead Westwood (10-5). His freshman brother, Vin, and junior RJ Annechini chipped in 16 apiece.

Westwood, the 14th seed, scored the game’s first 14 points, and its aggressive man-to-man defense forced 19th-seeded Waldwick to miss its first 11 shots. The Cardinals held 1,800-point career scorer, senior Andrew Del Rey, to 10 points, sending a second defender at him on penetration.

“Starting the game, you have to make your presence shown,” said Joe Cerritelli, who hit a pair of 3-pointers during the game-opening run. “So if you show your presence, and that you’re here to play, we can show the other team that they’ve got something to be scared of.”

When Waldwick (11-5) settled down and pulled within 23-21 in the second quarter, Westwood answered with a 13-2 run to take a 36-23 halftime lead. Annechini started it with a 15-foot jumper, he scored on a drive, and Joe Cerritelli stroked a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 30-21 lead.

“We hit shots, we put in a specific game plan because Del Rey is really, really good, and I think we did a great job on him and disrupted what they wanted to do,” said Carcich, whose Cardinals face No. 3 St. Mary in the Round of 16 on Jan. 31 at 4:15 p.m. in the last of four games at Tenafly. “I’m just really proud of the kids.”

Dwight-Englewood, the 11th seed, held on to defeat No. 22 Old Tappan, 60-58, despite scoring just three points in the fourth.
