The Boston Red Sox made the first move of the trade deadline season, acquiring infielder Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Connelly Early on Saturday night. The 25-year-old has played all around the infield during his now four-year major league career, giving the Red Sox more versatility regardless of how they use him.
Here's what you need to know about how Mead fits into the Red Sox plans:
Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow met with the media on Sunday morning to discuss the move to acquire Mead, saying the plan is for the 25-year-old to take over duties at second base, but also noting that he will be used all around the field in order to give both third baseman Caleb Durbin and first baseman Willson Contreras some time off their feet.
Mead has spent 320.2 innings at second base in his career, posting a -2 defensive runs saved and a zero outs above average and fielding run value. Despite the rough overall numbers, Mead spent 108.2 innings at the position with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he posted a defensive runs saved of two, an outs above average of two, and a fielding run value of one.

Of course, Breslow has placed an increased emphasis on strong pitching and infield defense. So if Mead is unable to provide strong defense, he could find himself taking over the designated hitter spot, with Romy Gonzalez, Anthony Seigler, and eventually the injured Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Marcelo Mayer handling the bulk of the work at second.
Mead immediately slots into the Red Sox lineup and becomes one of the team's best hitters. His .256 batting average ranks third on the team behind only All-Stars' Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela. He will rank second on the team, behind only Contreras, in on-base percentage (.352), slugging percentage (.505), OPS (.856), and home runs (17).
Whether it be Gonzalez, Seigler, Kiner-Falefa, or Mayer, the Red Sox have not gotten much production at the plate from their second basemen, ranking 21st in baseball with a 90 weighted runs created plus. Not only will Mead fill a massive need at second base, but he will add some much-needed pop to a Red Sox lineup that has hit only 98 home runs, the second-fewest in baseball.

In addition to adding 17 home runs to a Red Sox lineup in desperate need of power, the 25-year-old will provide a boost to the Boston offense against right-handed pitching, where their 87 wRC+ ranks 28th in baseball. Mead has been platoon-proof in 2025, hitting .236/.339/.478/.817 with 10 home runs and a wRC+ of 125 against right-handed pitching.
Mead will join the team as they head out to the West Coast for a seven-game road trip beginning on Monday night in Sacramento, taking on the Athletics. Payton Tolle (5-6, 3.31 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox opposite Jack Perkins (2-5, 6.75 ERA) for the Athletics. First pitch from Sutter Health Park is set for 9:40 p.m. ET.
