After an offseason of working to become a two-way player, Vanderbilt football's Martel Hight finally got an opportunity to play both ways in a game against Charleston Southern.
In the 45-3 win, Hight caught two passes for 17 yards and made four tackles on defense. He also returned one punt for 11 yards.
"It was fun playing with Diego (Pavia) instead of against him," Hight said. "It kind of brought me back to my high school days, playing both ways in high school, so it was fun."
There were a few times when Hight had opportunities but couldn't connect. On one deep downfield pass from Pavia, Hight beat his defenders but the pass was overthrown. On another, Hight said he misjudged the ball after it was tipped by the defender. Hight said he was to blame on that incompletion.
As far as his role in the game, Hight said he knew how much he would be playing both offense and defense coming in. To start the season, coach Clark Lea limited Hight's offensive snaps after he missed time in the preseason due to a concussion. For now, he will primarily focus on defense while coming in during certain offensive packages.
