In the wake of Tony Romo’s OWI arrest in Wisconsin last week, there has been much speculation about what the incident will mean for his future at CBS. Romo has occupied the No. 1 analyst spot alongside Jim Nantz since 2017 and is currently on a 10-year, $180 million contract. He has one of the most attractive positions in all of football media and is one of the most high-profile voices in the game.
So any change to the status quo would be significant and it would be a major move by the network to decide to pivot away from Romo. The Daily Mail is touting what they call an exclusive report that says CBS has already made such a decision and Romo’s position is safe.
“He might step back a little, short term, but he isn’t going anywhere long term,” a source told the Daily Mail. That wouldn’t make any sense for us at all.”
“Thankfully, Tony didn’t hurt himself or anyone else, and most importantly, no lives were lost,” the source told the Mail. “He knows he made a terrible decision and is well aware of it and he knows he disappointed not only himself, but those he works with and family. He contacted his bosses almost immediately to let them know what had happened because he understood the story would spread quickly once it became public. He’s already canceled his appearance at the golf tournament he was scheduled to attend and play in, and over the next few weeks he’s looking to keep a low profile while focusing on getting himself ready for the upcoming season.”
Obviously, this reporting has not been matched by the more traditional outlets that typically cover American sports media.
Some might see this bit of bad press as an opportunity for CBS to reconsider what is an enormous contract playing out amid diminished returns. Romo was an absolute superstar the moment he stepped into the booth, thanks large in part to his parlor trick of accurately predicting plays. But it’s fair to say that his star has diminished a little in recent years as the performance has regressed back to the mean. He and Nantz certainly retain that “big game” feel but also have their fair share of detractors.
Personally, I would be very surprised if Romo was not in the booth next season. If only for the fact that getting rid of him would create months and months of new news cycles on the issue instead of hoping chatter dies down as the arrest gets further and further in the past.
