It's been nearly 20 years since the last time we saw a playoff at the U.S. Open, and unsurprisingly, the USGA has changed how it would decide a winner since Tiger Woods' marathon playoff win in 2008.
Though Wyndham Clark entered Sunday's final round at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club with a commanding lead, he struggled mightily to bring Sam Burns within striking distance after a final-round 67.
Up until 2018, the USGA had used an 18-hole playoff format. But the governing body did away with that lengthy process in favor of a more reasonable approach. It makes a lot more sense.
If two golfers are tied after 72 holes, the U.S. open will go into a two-hole aggregate playoff. In this case, Clark and Burns would replay the par-3 17th and par-4 18th holes. The golfer with the lower score would be declared the champion.
If the golfers remained tied after the two playoff holes, they will replay the 17th and 18th aggregate format until a winner emerges.
