CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers made a somewhat questionable move at the deadline by sending Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for picks and then Eric Gordon to the Memphis Grizzlies for a future pick swap.
McCain, especially, is a questionable one due to him only being in his second season. Yes, it had been a struggle at times, but he's also returning from a serious meniscus tear in his left knee and was working to find his groove again on the offensive end.
With that being said, McCain is now with the Thunder and it is what it is at this point. Moving McCain does allow the Sixers to get under the luxury tax and have financial flexibility to re-sign Quentin Grimes in the offseason. After a long 2025 summer that ended with him signing the qualifying offer, Grimes will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.
"In fact, we talked to his representation quite a bit through this period," President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey said regarding Grimes. "Obviously, who knows exactly what the future brings, but we think he's a tremendous fit with our other guards, two-way player, and you know, we hope to re-sign him."
With that being said, Grimes has been a bit up and down as well. One can argue that Grimes is the better player right now and will likely help them more right now than McCain, but there is a school of thought that the Sixers may have given up on McCain too early.
"I wouldn’t say that, no," Morey said of that notion. "I think he has a tremendous future. Sort of the whole tell with people who don’t like the deal is they’ll leave off the return, minimize this draft, which we think is good, and things like that. That return is for a starter-quality player on a good team. It’s actually above that. We do a lot of analysis on how we think things will play out both here and around the league going forward, in terms of the quality of play. What kinds of returns will there be for what players in the future? And the bottom line is Jared is a player who’s a great future bet and a potential great player. We wish him luck."
Morey did maintain that the Sixers were looking to flip the picks acquired in the McCain deal to then acquire a player to help them right now. There just wasn't anything available to Morey's liking. That's an answer not a lot of people will accept, but it is what it is at the moment.
"We feel that this returns sets us up better to set up the team in the future," Morey finished. "That doesn’t address our team now. We did want to add now and it didn’t happen. So I think that’s a fair reaction. I think it’s a fair reaction. Did you time this well? Is this a fair return? All I can say is we do a lot of work on this and we feel like it was well above that and well above what will help us down the road."
