Texas A&M's football program is on the right track under coach Mike Elko, who is entering his third season after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. When measuring success, making the CFP is just the first step, while winning 11 games for the first time since the 2012 season was fully expected given the talented 2025 roster.
This offseason, Elko accomplished another goal after seeing a record 10 players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft after adding 17 players from the transfer portal, while returning 65% of the 2025 roster, most notably redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, junior wide receiver Mario Craver, and future NFL safeties Marcus Ratcliffe and Dalton Brooks.
So, what would make Texas A&M's 2026 campaign a success? According to one analyst, defeating Texas at the end of the regular season, which would be the program's first win in the season since 2010, and first victory under Mike Elko.
While the Longhorns are expected to compete for a national championship with QB Arch Manning returning, paired with Auburn transfer WR Cam Coleman now on the roster, it's fair to say that Texas and Texas A&M are not far apart talent-wise, and hosting the Longhorns in Kyle Field, at night, is more than enough to get the Aggies over the hump.
Texas A&M's 2026 schedule is tough, but compared to Texas, the Aggies are more than talented enough to match last season's success with at least nine or more wins, after finishing 11-2, with back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP. Elko and his veteran roster are looking to finish the season on a much better note.
Out of the transfer portal, Northwestern transfer edge Anto Saka and former Tennessee cornerback Rickey Gibson are expected to make an immediate impact after losing unanimous All-American edge Cashius Howell and veteran CB Will Lee III to the NFL, while Tulsa transfer linebacker Ray Coney continues to receive offseason buzz after recording 100-plus tackles with the Golden Hurricanes last season.
Marcel Reed's poor play, combined with Texas A&M's leaky run defense, allowed Arch Manning to expose the Aggies in the second half, while Reed's two late interceptions can and should be avoided this fall after watching tape, and avoiding "mental mistakes" when the game is on the line.
