I watched the guy in the Senior Bowl and man the guy just run guys over. Here is a guy who is a big battering ram ( 6'1 240 ) but I don't think his type of running will last in the NFL. He was also injured i think on his junior year like his former FSU teamate ( Boldin ). Here's a pic of him in the Senior Bowl.

That's not a Bettis type 250 lbs. If he's available in the 2nd I sure wouldn't mind having him in red.

Did you hear the interview with Jones at the Senior Bowl. He barely could speak english. He is nothing like Boldin. The senior bowl coaches were pissed at his attitude. Boldin is a high class individual.

Where did I say he is like Boldin? I said he was injured like his former teamate Boldin. Now again where did you get the idea I said he was like Boldin again?

Liability above the shoulders. If you are 3 months away from getting PAID to play football, wouldn't you do absolutely anything the coaches asked you to do. "I hate blocking, I won't do it." His blocking effort on that running play up the middle was beyond pathetic, WTF is up with that crap. I'd cut him if he did that in a game for the Cards.

That interview on the sideline almost made me feel sorry for the guy, ALMOST.

I think he would be a great 2nd round pick. That would be the 3rd pick in the 2nd round , I believe. He can't turn the corner every time, but when he does his speed is scary. He is a load up the middle. If he can pick up blitzes in the NFL, I don't think he will ever be required to run block. For pro potential he might be just behind Steven Jackson, but there are a whole bunch of non 1st round backs out there. In my opinion, I feel Jones would have more potential than Shipp, because of his speed differential. I would love to see an offensive pick in the 2nd , 3rd and 4th round. RB, WR, TE.

P.S. 2 years ago he ran for 250 yards against a very good U of Miami defense. He was the one player who scared Hell out of Miami coaches.

P.S.S. He is a 20 carry back. Not a 30.

No, thank you. We already have a RB who's a great pounder, without great hands, who still needs to learn how to block properly. Now, if there's a good power back that HAS those other skills, THEN I might consider them in the 2nd round. Otherwise, we don't need a guy like this before at least the 5th or 6th round, and he ain't lasting that long.

When you question blocking ability, are you talking about run blocking or blitz pickups?

Hodgins is the blocking back and if Shipp can't pick up the blitz, then that makes Jones a possibly better RB. I would hope that coming out of a pro set offense at FSU, Jones would have at least seen blitz pick ups. Maybe that is why Rix is so shell shocked. :D

P.S. Jones at FSU last year 144 carries, 9 catches.

Two words: Jarrod Payton

Jarrod has a better pedigree....and is a lot smarter than Jones....but who isn't?

He showed me alot during the Orange Bowl. Given what he's gone through in recent years, the kid continues to plug along. Great attitude, work ethic, and love for the game. I hope he makes it. I wouldn't mind seeing him in Cardinal Red.

If Payton is still there on the 4th round Sure pick him up.

I was thinking in terms of blitz pickup. Isn't that supposed to be one of the knocks on him, whether it comes from a lack of ability or lack of work ethic?

Definitely a knock on him from what I hear and see. Ask Chris Rix. He does the Matador cape thing on the blitz. He has been pretty nonchalant during his stay at Tallahassee, from what I ubderstand. Just looking at the guy and watching him on the good plays makes one drool. Watching him take plays off makes you shake your head.

Yeah, like I said, I'd take a flyer on him in the later rounds, but not any earlier. He's worth a mid-rounder, to be sure, if not a 2nd or 3rd, but not for us. We already have him in Marcel Shipp, thanks (sans the attitude).

I honestly don't think you will see Payton playing in the NFL. Hard to believe, being Walter Payton's son, that he had very little football experience when he came to U of Miami. Played soccer as a youth. Frittered away 3 seasons with off field injuries and personal issues. One year a motorcycle accident and auto accident. Another year scuba diving accident ( lacerated foot ). Showed very little instinct for playing the RB position. Straight ahead, upright runner. Slow to hole with no cutback ability. Way too many negative plays. Tenacious at best. Too tall to be a classic runner. When this team went into a midseason funk, lost 2 games and squeeked out 2 more, he was spotlighted and really didn't do the job. Nice guy , good story that doesn't translate well to the game. Were it not for major injuries to Gore, he would have seen mop up duty at best. That bowl game was more of what he could have been, but too little too late. 5 year senior who didn't play until second half of final year, and that because of others injuries. It was scary with him in there.

P.S. Some very critical fumbles.

Greg Jones had a good Senior Bowl. You have to admit he is a banger. I think he is close to what Marcel Shipp is now. Similar players. I think Jones is a little stronger. If you want to really beat up a defense, a combination of Jones and Shipp could do it. Jones is a definite second rounder. I would strongly consider him if Emmitt retired and Damien Anderson could not return.

I see Jones as being a bigger/faster version of Shipp. Even if Emmitt comes back, for how long. I think the need at RB is greater than some other areas. RBs life span is about 4 productive years. That speaks volumes.

After the interview I seen of Greg Jones, I don't think he's smart enough to have an attitude. He is ripped, that is for sure. The guy has a 8 pack.

You have a good point Wally. Although I want the Cards to draft defense in the second round, it wouldn't bother me to see us have Jones.

I agree he is bigger and a bit stronger than Shipp. I think they are pretty close as far as speed and moves though.
