There are three very relevant letters in certain Olympic skiing and snowboarding competitions.

Those letters: DNI.

They appear on the scoreboard now and again, and they can leave viewers wondering the same question.

What does DNI mean in Olympics?​

DNI means: Did Not Improve.

It comes into play in any event that has multiple runs without counting all the scores.

For example, the Big Air competitions in Olympic skiing and snowboarding include three downhill runs for every competitor.

Of those three runs in Big Air, though, only two scores count.

So if you score an 80 on your first run, an 80 on your second run and a 70 on your third run, that third slot ends up being a DNI. You did not improve on the first two scores, and your final score is a 160.

It would be easy to wonder whether it has something to do with not completing a particular maneuver, or being disqualified or otherwise knocked out or punished.

Not at all. It simply means a third score didn't uplift the total score of the two best combined numbers.

It's more a matter of procedure and keeping track of the math than anything more important.
